Floral Kaftan for Women

This kaftan was inspired by brightly colored flower bouquets. The main pattern focus of the kaftan was a thick floral vine boarder design.

This color palette was created by pulling colors from pictures of bright floral bouquets. I contentiously picked the colors so that I would have a large range of flowers to make and have as much variation as I could.

This is a small presentation made that includes research about the demographic for the kaftan and the inspiration for the design.

Flat Design and Details

This is the flat layout of the whole kaftan. The front is displayed on the left and the back is displayed on the right.

These are detail photographs of the different sections of the kaftan which include a photograph of the neckline in the top left, the back bottom border in the top right, the front opening corner in the bottom left, and the overall background design in the bottom right.

Process

This projects motifs went through many iterations before it got to the designs that is shown above. It started as making the motifs within Photoshop but it was not looking how I was hoping so I pivoted to making all of the motifs by hand. I  make a sketch and then traced only parts of the sketch on two different papers; one with the flowers and leaves and one with the vines.  I then colored them in using alcohol markers.

Once I was happy with how they looked, I scanned them into the computer and took them into Adobe Photoshop. I cleaned all of the edges and took out the background. I then created my final file where it was the exact measurements of the kaftan. I places many guidelines so that I could block out the different areas of the design. I created the background first by overlapping these marker strokes I made and grouped them together and continues to place them all around. Once that was complete I started on the vines. I places the vines all along the boarder of where I wanted flowers. I then went and blended all of the seams of where they matches. After all the vines were in the correct position I went in and individually placed all of the flowers on the vines.

After placing all of the flowers and the leaves onto the vines, I decided that it was still missing something so I added a background stripe of color behind the vines and flowers. I decided to stick with the green color so I added a light green that fit well with the rest of the greens I had. I then added a line around the stripe of dark green to help further differentiate the floral boarder and the background.

After some feedback from others, I decided that the boarder needed to be thicker and that there needed to be some solid stripes on the outside edges of the kaftan. I added more stripes of different hues of green around all the edges where the floral vines were.

The design was then printed on a polyester fabric and will be sewn together soon!
